Woodbine could soon be Toronto’s version of Orillia’s Casino Rama.
Woodbine Entertainment Group has announced a memorandum of understanding with Trinity Development Grpi[ for a 5000-seat concert venue.
It’s the first step in redeveloping the 275-hectare parcel of land near the 427 and Rexdale Boulevard since Toronto City Council approved plans in July that would allow a major casino there.
As a condition of the expansion, city council required that other non-gaming entertainment be built alongside the casino.
Woodbine Entertainment CEO Jim Lawson says his vision also includes “restaurants, a movie theatre and shops in the first phase of the revitalization.” He says later phases could include “homes, offices and a satellite campus for a university or college.”
Lawson pegged the earliest possible date for opening the concert venue for some time in 2018.
The line-up over the next few months at the 5000-seat venue at Casino Rama includes musicians Boyz II Men, ZZ Top, Diana Ross and comedians such as Tracy Morgan and Bill Burr.
