The strike or lockout deadline for the City of Toronto’s outside workers came and went at 12:01 this morning.

No deal has been announced yet, but representatives with both sides continue to talk in a marathon session at the Doubletree Hotel downtown.

A new offer was presented to CUPE Local 416 last evening and negotiations overnight have gone well and continue to go well this morning. Word out of the meeting room, is that there’s “no timetable on a deal” yet. It could come in “minutes or hour.”

Mayor John Tory spoke to reporters last evening about his hopes for a reasonable and fair settlement for a group of valued employees. A short time later, Tim Maguire, president of the CUPE Local 79 inside workers said the union has dropped demands for benefits enhancements, but cannot agree to cuts.

The inside workers are in a legal strike or lockout position at 12:01 am tomorrow.

The City of Toronto has posted contingency plans in the event of a city workers’ strike or lockout.
