AMERICAN PAINTER PAYS TRIBUTE TO SYNAGOGUES OF HISTORIC POLAND

An exhibition of abstract works by American painter Frank Stella has opened in Warsaw, Poland paying tribute to wooden synagogues that were destroyed by the Nazis during World War II.

Museum officials say it’s the first time Stella’s paintings have been shown alongside the sources that inspired him – architectural drawings and photos of synagogues taken before the war.
Poland was once home to Europe’s largest Jewish community numbering nearly 3.5 million people before the war.
Most were killed in the Holocaust and traces of their culture also destroyed.
