Premier Kathleen Wynne has formally apologized to Ontario’s Francophones. At issue is a 1912 regulation that banned elementary school teachers from speaking French.
Although the law was only enforced for about 15 years, Wynne told the legislature today that Regulation 17 showed a disregard for Franco-Ontarian identity and equality.
Wynn dismissed the idea of compensation or reparations
citing the French services and schools provided by the province. There are also plans for creating a French University.
