The City of Toronto’s inside workers begin a work-to-rule campaign today, after negotiators for their union and the city failed to come to an agreement over the weekend.

CUPE Local 79 President Tim Maguire held a late night news conference to explain that there’s been no significant movement on the key issues, including job security and job stability.

He says the work-to-rule campaign will not disrupt city services, but instead will put pressure on city management.

“This work to rule campaign is not about, and there will not be disruption in service,” Maguire explained, “This work-to-rule campaign will have our members demonstrate to the City of Toronto the value of their work and the savings that the city of Toronto achieves by our members working for free, and by doing the extra duties they do beyond their primary duties in their job descriptions.”

Mayor John Tory issued a statement during the day yesterday, saying he’s “disappointed that Maguire has chosen to threaten to escalate this unnecessary job action…and that it won’t assist the efforts made by the city and the provincial conciliators to conclude a collective agreement.”

CUPE Local 79 represents 23,100 employees including child care and shelter workers, nurses, cleaners and planners.

Negotiations are expected to resume today.
