Toronto appears to have the first ever Photo Laureate in Canada – Geoffrey James.
Geoffrey James

He was nominated by a selection committee made up from the city’s photography and visual arts community.
The selection of the 74-year-old self-taught, internationally acclaimed photographer still requires approval from city council which is expected to come at council’s March meeting.

James says photography has always helped him understand the world and Toronto is a wonderful subject, calling it ”a city in a constant state of transformation, an exhilarating social experiment, as well as a place that reveals itself slowly.”

Recognized as a master of landscape and urban photography, he received the 2012 Governor General’s Award for Visual and Media Arts.

James’ work is also featured on a 20-15 Canada Post stamp – the portrait of artist Alex Colville, which was taken while he was writing a profile of the iconic Canadian painter.
