In last week’s budget, the government said starting in August, single seniors with an income of up to $19,300 would qualify for coverage – an increase of approximately $3,000.
But as CARP’s Wanda Morris pointed out, the cutoff is still low enough to have a significant negative impact on many older Zoomers whose incomes are just above the threshold.
Seniors above it will have to pay a $170 deductible, up from $100, and their co-payment per prescription will rise $1.
But after questioning in the legislature Monday by NDP Leader Andrea Horwath, Premier Kathleen Wynne said her government will ”look carefully” at the plan and if the Liberals didn’t get it right she said they will ”correct” the threshold.
For senior couples, the threshold’s set to rise to $32,000.
