We’ve heard it from Zoomer’s time and time again.
Phone scams from callers who say they are agents of the Canada Revenue Agency.
It goes like this – victims are told they owe money to the CRA, payment is demanded and a threat of immediate arrest is made if they don’t pay up.
The Toronto Police Fraud Squad says that’s not how the Canada Revenue Agency works. You will always be contacted through the mail – and you will never be threatened by the agency.
Phone numbers show up in Caller ID which are often fake, or ‘spoofed.’ In one case, a victim reported that the phone call came from a Toronto Police phone line.
Officers say if you’ve been scammed, call police immediately.
