It appears Mayor John Tory’s plan to target rush-hour parkers has been effective.

Toronto Police say the number of vehicles towed nearly doubled in 2015 to 42,763 including 17,348 vehicles as a result of rush-hour enforcement. In 2014, 20,238 vehicles in total were towed.

An enforcement blitz on vehicles illegally parked curbside during rush hours began in January of last year, following the mayor’s promise of a crackdown. John Tory and Toronto Police Chief Mark Saunders announced renewed efforts last fall, saying some drivers were falling into old habits.

But police claim the increased efforts to tow vehicles from city streets during rush hours mean the total number of parking tickets issued last year continued to decrease for the fourth year in a row. Parking ticket revenues bolster increasingly cash-strapped city budgets.
