The funeral for Rob Ford was not a solemn service with tears.
Those who eulogized the former Toronto mayor made sure of that.
Laughter and applause echoed at times throughout St. James Cathedral downtown.
His 10-year-old daughter Stephanie said her father was a great mayor who helped a lot of people and was also an amazing dad.
With her mother standing behind her and her seven-year-old brother Dougie by her side, she recalled one of the last things her father told her.
“He said ‘I want you to remember that I’ll always love you. I need you and your brother to be strong for your mom.’ I know my dad is in a better place now and he’s the mayor of heaven now.”
Former premier Mike Harris called Ford a ”breath of fresh air” at city hall, who believed in doing what he said he’d do – put people first – adding those in public life could learn a couple things from Ford.
Brother Doug, who led the procession from city hall, fought back tears.
”I’m going to miss you like crazy. I love you more than anything in the world .. and don’t worry Ford Nation will continue. We’ll continue respecting the taxpayers.”
A private burial followed the funeral.
A celebration of Rob Ford’s life goes this evening at the Toronto Congress Centre on Dixon Road.
