Toronto Police are reminding pedestrians to be aware of the weather and to cross at intersections with traffic lights or crosswalks. They also ask people out walking to be aware of their surroundings and make sure to use eye contact to confirm they are seen by drivers.

The warning comes after a rash of collisions last night involving pedestrians when there was heavy rain.

A 62 year old man died after he was struck and killed in Scarborough village. The motorist involved has been charged with impaired driving causing death.

Toronto Police Constable Clint Stibbe says heightened awareness is key in staying safe.

“What is the public doing in order to make their commute a safer one?” Stibbe asked while speaking to CP24, “and when drivers are taking chances driving too fast, driving after consuming alcohol, or not wearing seat belts, or maybe making that turn not paying attention to that pedestrian, or maybe at the same time a pedestrian may be crossing at mid-block against the lights, these are all types of situation that put you at risk, and unfortunately, in some cases, that risk can take your life.”

In all, five people and a cyclist were hit by vehicles last night. That list includes an 11 year old child who was taken to hospital with minor injuries after being hit by a car near Avenue Road and Lawrence.
