Toronto city council’s voted unanimously to hold a byelection July 25 in to see who will take over Rob Ford’s Ward 2 Etobicoke North seat.

The Ford’s are hoping to keep it in the family.

Michael Ford’s announced he’s resigned his school trustee position in the area to run for the council seat.

His uncle Rob held it from 2000 to 2010 until he became mayor and Michael’s other uncle Doug was councillor for the area.

Rob Ford then slid back into the council seat again from 2014 until his death in March.

Michael Ford issued a statement, part of which reads, ”Three generations of the Ford family have served our our community.  I want to build on this legacy of public service, and that means showing up at your door when you need assistance.  My message to the residents of Ward 2 is simple:  together we can accomplish great things for the community.  I will work around the clock to bring jobs and economic development to our area.  I will be a strong voice for taxpayers and fight to make our City more affordable.  I will support investments in public transit and push for sustainable programs that help our communities thrive.”

Meanwhile a victory for two wheelers in Toronto.

Council’s voted 38-3 to move forward with a pilot project to install separated cycling lanes along a 2.6 km stretch of Bloor between Shaw Street and Avenue Road.

The lanes should be in by late summer and staff plan to report back in the summer of next year – whether the cycling lanes should be made permanent, removed, or modified.
