Interim Conservative leader Rona Ambrose says – without amendments, she will vote against federal legislation – aimed at allowing Canadians to look for medical help to end their lives.

Ambrose says she wants to see stronger safeguards for the disabled community – and  issues such as mental health aren’t well enough addressed.

Ambrose is waiting to see if those issues – and other provisions – are strengthened by the time the bill gets to the final stage – but her opposition doesn’t bind other members of the Conservative caucus – who will be allowed to vote their conscience.

The House of Commons and Senate are currently studying the legislation – and aim to  make it law by June 6th.

That’s the date the Supreme Court set – after it struck down the existing ban on doctor-assisted death.
