Toronto’s iconic Royal Alexandra Theatre is getting a $2.5 million dollar facelift – in what David Mirvish says will enable it to welcome the 21st century.
The legendary theatre is one of the oldest continuously operating legitimate theatres in North America – and will close it’s doors May 15th after Kinky Boots ends its 11 month run.
The Royal Alex, as it’s lovingly known, will re-open November 15th, 2016 – with the Canadian premier of Come From Away – the Broadway bound musical about the people of Gander, Newfoundland.
The renovations will reduce the seating capacity but will increase leg room. The new seats will look identical to the original 1907 seats – and the rake of the orchestra level will be restored to its original angle.
Mirvish says the goal is to continue to build Toronto’s reputation as a great theatre city.
