An Alberta woman’s family is thanking the courts for granting her a doctor-assisted death.

The woman suffers from a severe mental condition – and in a written statement, her  family is also pleading with the federal government to respect the ruling by a Court of Queen’s Bench judge.

The judge allowed the woman an assisted death earlier this month – and the Court of Appeal upheld the decision this week.

She’s known in court documents as E.F. – and has severe conversion disorder.

It has left her effectively blind, unable to eat and in constant pain from migraines.

The Appeal Court ruling criticized the federal government’s proposed legislation on assisted death – saying the bill doesn’t comply with the Supreme Court’s landmark decision – because the bill excludes people suffering solely from psychiatric conditions.
