Ontario says it’s spending 222 million dollars to improve health care for First Nations people – especially in the North.

The First Nations health action plan will provide the funding over three years – and focus on primary care, public health, senior’s care, hospital services and crisis support.

The services of doctors will be increased for 28 communities across the region of Sioux Lookout – and up to 10 new, or expanded, primary care teams will also provide services – including traditional healing.

The Wynne government says the initial investment will be followed by ongoing funding of $104.5 million dollars each year – to correct health care inequities and improve access to culturally appropriate health services over the long term.

The province also says it will expand access to fresh fruits and vegetables – for about 13-thousand indigenous children – and expand diabetes programs in northern and remote communities.
