Police Chief Mark Saunders says ”a genuine health concern” and a ”significant” number of complaints from the community is what prompted officers to raid over 40 marijuana dispensaries across the city.
”Project Claudia (as the investigation is known) is not an attack on the lawful distribution or purchasing of marijuana for medical purposes,” said the chief.
He points out nearly half the dispensaries raided were within 300 metres of schools.
Police charged 90 people and laid 186 charges.
Some question the timing of the raid since Ottawa announced April 20 it would seek to introduce legislation to legalize and regulate marijuana in 2017.
