Some stepped into the street to touch the flower covered hearse as it entered the cemetery.
His marker simply reads ”Ali”.
Afterward, an interfaith memorial service was held in a sport arena packed with politicians, celebrities and athletes.
The crowd of up to 15,000 burst into applause and chanted, ”Ali, Ali” when a Muslim religious leader welcomed them to ”the home of the people’s champ.”

His widow, Lonnie Ali, talked about how he wanted to be remembered.
”Mohammad indicated that when the end came for him, he wanted to use his life and his death as a teaching moment.  He wanted to remind people who are suffering that he had seen the face of injustice.
She reminded everyone that his message still resonates, that he was prepared to sacrifice all he had, all that he was, to follow his soul.
