Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has restated that Canada won’t pay ransoms for hostages as the government seeks confirmation that a second Canadian held in the Philippines has been killed by his terrorist captors.

Trudeau says in a statement that Robert Hall was likely killed, and the Canadian government is working with authorities in the Philippines.

The al-Qaeda-linked terror group Abu Sayyef had warned it would kill Robert Hall today if an $8-million ransom wasn’t paid.

Sources on the island where Abu Sayyef is based, confirmed Hall’s death to the news media early this morning.

Canadian officials are said to be working closely with authorities in the Philippines to formally confirm Hall’s death, but are said to have compelling reason to believe that published reports of the Calgary man’s death are true.

Hall, had been held since September of last year with fellow Canadian John Ridsdel, who was killed by the group in late April.
