Labour MP Jo Cox has died after being shot in the town of Birstall, near Leeds.
Police will not release the motive but according to witnesses Cox was trying to break up an argument between two men over next week’s referendum on whether Britain should leave or remain part of the European Union.
Apparently, one of the men shouted ”Britain first.”
A 52-year-old man’s in custody.
Groups on both sides of the referendum have suspending campaigning.
Meanwhile, in Luxembourg, EU finance ministers paid silent tribute to Cox.
Eurogroup chair Jeroen Dijsselbloem said ”the U.K. is a beacon for peaceful politics and we hope that the British public, the people of the U.K., can make their choices serenely and in a safe way”.
