The just-released report on the future of Toronto’s police service contains proposals for ”far-reaching” and ”unprecedented” changes.
The 35-page report from the police service and its civilian board says there’s an ”opportunity to redefine, revitalize and modernize the service to achieve a new level of excellence and leadership.”
Many of the two-dozen recommendations have been leaked in recent days, including shutting down some of the 17 police stations – by redrawing the divisional map and amalgamating some stations.
There’s also a recommendation to disband TAVIS (the Toronto Anti-Violence Intervention Strategy) and to redeploy officers.
Another recommendation calls for a three year freeze on hiring and promotions – which would see the current 52-hundred officers reduced to just under 48-hundred.
Police Association President Mark McCormack says that  concerns him because he’s watching out for the public’s safety – and that of his officers.
The recommendations are expected to be presented to tomorrow’s police services board meeting – and public consultations would be held before any of the moves are implemented.
