The Senate’s given in to the Commons and will not insist suffering Canadians who are not near death should have the right to seek medical help to end their lives.
Senators voted 44-28 to accept the more restrictive approach in the government’s Bill C-14, which limits the right to assisted dying to those whose natural death’s ”reasonably foreseeable.”
The red chamber had passed an amendment to expand the scope of the legislation to include those not terminally ill, but the Commons voted Thursday to reject it.
Rather than have the bill bounce back to the Commons, senators decided to give up and take the government’s version.
