A vast treasure trove of artifacts and ancestral remains from British Columbia First Nations – are scattered around the world – and Premier Christy Clark says she wants to help get them back.
Clark says centuries worth of human remains and belongings that are of cultural significance to B.C.’s aboriginal peoples – have ended up in museums and private collections all over the planet – and its time they were returned.
The premier is writing to U.S. President Barack Obama to ask him to extend to British Columbia – the rights under the Native American Grave Protection Act – that makes it law to return human remains.
Clark chose National Aboriginal Day to announce the government program to identify and return the aboriginal items.
The CEO of the Royal B.C. Museum says the museum will work with the province and First Nations – to identify items and have them returned.
