Toronto’s Hot Docs Movie Festival is getting a $5 million dollar shot in the arm from the family of the late media mogul Ted Rogers.
$4 million of the gift will allow the festival to buy the 103-year old former Madison Theatre near Bloor and Bathurst and keep it as the world’s only free standing documentary movie theatre.
The other million will go to create the Hot Docs “Ted Rogers” Fund to support documentary filmakers.
Hot Docs President Chris McDonald says the gift will help safeguard the festival’s legacy in perpetuity.
