Acclaimed Iranian director Abbas Kiarostami, whose 1997 film “Taste of Cherry” won the top award at Cannes has died in Paris at the age of 76 after a battle with cancer.
Kiarostami directed dozens of films over a career spanning more than 40 years and won the Palme D’or at Cannes for “Taste of Cherry,” which told the story of an Iranian man looking for someone to bury him after he commits suicide.
American director Martin Scorsese said Kiarostami represented the highest level of artistry in the cinema.
