Canada Post has issued a 72-hour lockout notice to the union representing 50,000 postal workers, which means Canadians might not have mail delivery beginning on Friday.

An announcement issued early this morning says the post office plans to suspend the current agreement covering employees with the Canadian Union of Postal Workers as of Friday, but adds the notice doesn’t necessarily mean it will shut down on Friday.

In response, CUPW says Canada Post has refused to negotiate fairly and now plans to lock the doors to “try to starve us into submission.”

CARP’s Wade Poziomka told Zoomer Radio’s Fight Back with Libby Znaimer, if Canada Post shuts down over a labour disruption it won’t be nearly as impactful as the big post office strike back in the 1970’s.

“There are certainly segments of the population that will be impacted more severely than others,” Poziomka explained, “It’ll likely include businesses, people using medicinal marijuana for example who are dependent on getting that product through the mail, and just the individuals without the electronic means of doing business, including our members who are seniors at CARP, a big portion of our members.”

Citing, in part, the rapid decline in mail volume, Canada Post says the measure to suspend a collective agreement with CUPW on Friday will allow it to take steps that are “necessary to respond to the changing business reality.”
