Expect your GO Train trip to take at least another 10 minutes this afternoon.

Metrolinx has issued a “go slow” order for Go Trains during an 8 hour period later today over concerns the intense heat could put kinks in the rails.
“We’re anticipating a slow order from 12 until 8 (pm), because it’s even hotter this week than last week,” explains Metrolinx’ Anne-Marie Aikens, ” We did have a slow order last week.  That is really unusual.  We had one last year for one day and none the year before, so this is unusual, we’re having a pretty hot Summer.”
Sustained high temperatures above 30 degrees can cause what are called sun kinks in steel rails. And these bends in the rail can be a safety issue if trains pass over them too quickly.

And according to the TTC, between 20 and 25 percent of the subway cars on the Bloor-Danforth line have been without air conditioning at any given time this summer due to mechanical issues. There are two reasons for this, according to experts at the TTC. The system is now 20 years old and beginning to show its age, and second, there is only one air conditioning system on each of the trains on the Bloor-Danforth line, as opposed to two on each of the newer trains on the Yonge-University-Spadina line.
