In efforts to encourage motorists to follow new lower speed limits introduced just last week, the city’s re-timed traffic lights along two busy downtown streets.
The posted limit along Adelaide and Richmond has been lowered from 50 km/h to 40 and the traffic signals have been changed.
Transportation Services spokesperson Steve Johnston says ”the goal is to keep vehicular traffic flowing smoothly and also to discourage speeding. Motorists that drive faster than the speed limit will hit a red light. This reflects the city’s efforts to keep traffic flowing at a safe and reasonable speed.”
Police say there were 180 collisions along the two streets in the first six months of the year.
