Good news for Zoomers facing knee and hip replacements.
knee replacementA new metal that is four times harder than pure titanium and has applications in making longer-lasting medical implants has been created in a lab by melting together titanium and gold.

According to American physicists, this is now the hardest known metallic substance compatible with living tissues.  The metal used now necessitates knee and hip implants to be replaced after about 10 years due to wear and tear.

Details of the new metal – an alloy of gold and titanium – called beta-Ti 3Au – are revealed in the current edition of the journal, “Science Advances.”
