Saying his actions were ”unreasonable, unnecessary and excessive”, a Toronto justice has sentenced Constable James Forcillo to six years for the 2013 attempted murder of teen Sammy Yatim aboard an empty streetcar.

In handing down his sentence, Justice Edward Then said cellphone video that went viral was ”powerful evidence” that what the officer claimed happened on the streetcar did not.

Forcillo’s lawyer says an appeal’s already been filed on both the conviction and sentencing.

The officer’s been suspended without pay.

He was acquitted in January of second-degree murder but found guilty of attempted murder for continuing to fire after the 18-year-old lay dying on the floor of the streetcar.

His lawyer’s had argued for house arrest instead of prison.

The Crown had asked for a sentence of between eight and 10 years.
