An Elliot Lake engineer goes on trial today charged with two counts of criminal negligence causing death in the collapse of a town mall four years ago.
Two women were killed when the mall’s roof caved in. At a public inquiry that followed, Engineer Robert Wood admitted falsifying a report on the structural soundness of the building to appease the Mall’s owner.
Wood’s lawyer has expressed concern the commission’s findings may jeopardize his right to a fair trial.
A conviction carries a maximum sentence of life in prison
