The school year here in Ontario is beginning amid labour peace.

Agreements have been reached with almost all employee groups in school boards across the province.

Toronto’s Catholic elementary teachers and the city’s public high school teachers reached tentative deals with their respective boards just before the start of the school year.

They are three year deals, but because they took so longer to broker, they will expire next summer.

Meantime, Education Minister Mitzie Hunter says math will be a focus as a new strategy is introduced to help address concerns over falling standardized test results.

“And that includes ensuring that we have teacher education and professional development,”Hunter explained,”In the elementary years, we have sixty minutes of protected dedicated time for math each day and having math leads in our schools is an important aspect as well because that boosts the confidence of teachers and students in the system.”

Hunter says “Ontario students are walking into classrooms filled with boundless opportunity.”
