Justice Robin Camp has told a Canadian Judicial Council inquiry he’s ”very sorry” for the ”hurtful” comments he made to the complainant in a 2014 sex assault trial when he was a provincial judge in Calgary.
Camp’s testimony came on the fourth day of the inquiry into his handling of a case in which he asked the woman why she ”couldn’t just keep (her) knees together.”
He told the panel of five Superior Court justices and senior lawyers he now recognizes how the remark was from a ”deep-rooted” bias he had and regrets ever uttering the ”inappropriate” words.
Camp’s since been elevated to Federal Court and faces the potential of being removed from the bench.
The Alberta Court of Appeal overturned Camp’s acquittal of the suspect in the case and ordered a new trial, citing concerns over Camp’s understanding of sex assault laws.
