Toronto Mayor John Tory says it’s long past time for the federal and provincial governments to “step up and invest in housing.
toryTory will announce today that he’s convening a summit on housing this Friday, bringing municipal leaders, including the mayors of Vancouver and Edmonton, to the same table.
The Mayor wants higher levels of government to earmark pending infrastructure investments specifically to housing as he faces a continuing crisis in affordable housing with crumbling public buildings and long wait-lists.
Toronto has received just $115 million for social housing in the first phase of the federal government’s social infrastructure spending, part of the $640 million Ottawa has allocated to Ontario.  The Wynne Government at Queen’s Park has committed $42.9 million dollars for energy retrofits for social-housing towers.

Toronto is facing a $2.6-billion dollars backlog in social housing repairs for Toronto Community Housing and by the end of the year TCH will have spent more than $600 million of the city’s own $864-million investment.
