A design for a new Statue of Liberty Museum has been unveiled – at a groundbreaking ceremony on Liberty Island in New York.
The glass, granite and concrete building is due to open in 2019 – across the circular plaza from the statue.

The small exhibition space inside the pedestal of the Statue of Liberty will be replaced – and the grass roof of the new 26,000 foot facility will blend in with the landscape – providing sweeping views of the iconic symbol and New York Harbour.
Architect Nicholas Garrison said the goal was to design a building that didn’t compete with the statue – and wasn’t the first thing visitors saw as they got off the ferry.
