A towering 9 metre obelisk will be the centrepiece of a new public realm project in Toronto.
Internationally – acclaimed artist Pierre Poussin will create the sculpture – after his design was chosen by an eight-member jury.
The call went out for “a work with a vertical element” – visible from all directions when approaching the Carlaw Triangle, which is the city-owned space west of Carlaw Avenue – and north of Dundas Street East.
The Dundas-Carlaw area will be transformed into an urban gathering space – featuring the winning monument design.
Poussin is a graduate of Sheridan College. He specializes in large scale public art installations. His work has been featured at the Vancouver 2010 Olympics, and Toronto’s Underpass Park.
The project is expected to be completed in 2018.
