Yet another pedestrian has been hit by a vehicle in the GTA. It happened Thursday evening in Markham. York Regional Police say it was on Woodbine Avenue just north of Steeles Avenue shortly after 7 o’clock, when a 34 year old woman was struck by a van travelling north as she was crossing the street.

This incident comes after nearly a dozen other pedestrian accidents in Toronto over the past few days, two of them deadly.

“The reality is, we’re not giving ourselves enough time to get where we’re going and as a result we’re taking chances, taking those short cuts. The problem is, those shortcuts are costing lives and we’re not saying every time the pedestrian is wrong, that’s not what I’m trying to suggest at all,” said Toronto Police Constable Clint Stibbe to Zoomer Radio’s Fight Back with Libby Znaimer.

How to protect vulnerable road users, especially older pedestrians, has become a hot topic at Toronto City Hall.

In June, the city put forward a new road safety plan. The original version of the plan set a target of reducing serious collisions by 20 percent over 10 years. Under public pressure, the plan was revised to set a target of “eliminating” serious collisions altogether. Public Works Chair, Councillor Jaye Robinson, says she’s been meeting with city staff in order to work on the quick implementation of the plan, which includes the creation of pedestrian safety corridors in areas that have seen a high volume of serious collisions.
