IT'S A GOOD STEP BUT WATER MOVES STILL WEAK

P-C Leader Patrick Brown says Ontario’s proposed moratorium on water-taking permits is a step in the right direction but he’s expressed concern about the price bottlers are paying.

Brown says the price Ontario charges big bottlers – is still too low.

And New Democrat environment critic Peter Tabuns agrees – saying municipalities should have first access to any new sources of drinking water – while bottling companies should move to the end of the line.

The government has posted a proposed regulation that would put water-taking permits on hold until 20-19 for new or expanded operations – that harvest groundwater to bottle and sell.

But the Wynne Liberals are not proposing any immediate increase to the almost $4.00 charged to companies – for every million litres of water taken.
