It’s all about balance in the Toronto mayor’s mind.

Speaking at Evergreen Brick Works, John Tory says ”we have been very good at approving the condo and office towers but we haven’t been so good at approving the parks and the open spaces and the community centres and the libraries that have to go with that development.”
The mayor made the remarks while announcing that donors have already contributed $3.5-million towards a new 200-hectare park that’ll one day run along the Don River.
The ‘Don River Valley Park’ campaign was launched last year with the aim of developing the green space on either side of the river from the Brick Works to the waterfront.
While the money raised so far won’t cover the entire cost of the project, Tory says it’ll pay for some initiatives that’ll make existing green space more accessible, including a bridge at Pottery Road that’ll serve as an entrance to the parkland and improved signage which will be in place in the spring.
The next step will be to designate the land as a city park.   Staff will begin that process later this week when a feasibility report goes to the Parks and Environment committee .
