The Wynne government intends to introduce legislation next spring to outlaw ‘scalper bots’ – computer software programs that scoop up big blocks of tickets to concerts and major sporting events, forcing many to go to the more expensive resale market.

 Attorney General Yasir Naqvi admits there’s no ‘silver’ bullet he can use to prevent hi-tech ticket scalping but says inaction’s not the answer either.

He says the government has to do something to try to protect consumers so they get a ”fair shot” at buying tickets.

Naqvi says he was ”bugged” to see Tragically Hip fans being shut out of initial tickets sales for the Canadian band’s farewell tour this past summer.

The attorney general says he’ll consult with consumer groups, entertainers and colleagues in other jurisdictions like New York, who’ve also struggled to deal with computer scalping.

Since many bots operate from outside the country, it’s not clear just how effective the law would be at stopping them.
