Donald Trump has spoken on the phone with Vladimir Putin for the first time.

According to a statement from the Kremlin, The U.S. President Elect and the Russian leader agreed in their conversation on Monday to review what both consider the poor state of relations between their two countries. And they both apparently endorsed the idea of undertaking joint efforts to normalize relations and pursue constructive cooperation on the broadest possible range of issues. These are said to include trade and economic ties as well as combatting terrorism.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau was asked by reporters in Toronto Monday whether the election of Trump as U.S. President will change the way Canada deals with Russia on issues like Russia’s seizure of Crimea from Ukraine.

“We’ve been very clear that the Russian incursion into Ukraine is unacceptable,” Trudeau explained, “We will continue to state that and support Ukraine in its struggle against Russian aggression.”

Vladimir Putin was one of the first world leaders to congratulate Trump on his U.S. presidential victory. The two men had not met nor had they spoken previously.
