A new production of Shakespeare’s Tempest by the Royal Shakespeare Company in Stratford-Upon-Avon, features a virtual character controlled in real time by an actor.
Mark Quartley plays the shape-changing sprite Ariel. He wears a motion-capture suit that allows him to dictate the movements of the avatar in real time. It is then computer projected on the stage.
The Tempest is believed to have been written around 1610 and is thought by many to be the last play that Shakespeare wrote alone.
