Mayor John Tory’s plan to implement road tolls on the Gardiner and DVP is going over well with most Toronto residents.

A new Mainstreet Research poll shows 70 percent of Torontonians approve of charging motorists for driving on the city’s expressways, including over 50 percent who strongly approve of the measure to fund transit and roads.

Downtown residents are most in favour of road tolls with close to 80 percent in favour. Approval is lowest in Etobicoke at just over 60 percent followed by Scarborough at 68 percent.

Tory’s road toll proposal still needs to be approved by Toronto City Council and then by the governing Liberals at Queen’s Park. Budget Chief Gary Crawford told Zoomer Radio News last week, it’ll take between 2 and 3 years before road tolls are operational on the DVP and Gardiner.
