Big raises are being given out to some Ontario civil servants.

A Toronto Star report says 8500 managers, executives and deputy ministers in Ontario’s civil service are getting $125-million in pay hikes.

It’s apparently all because of a salary freeze since 2009 that’s left some managers earning less than their unionized staff and lagging behind higher paid colleagues in the broader public sector and private business.

Managers and staff excluded from unionized jobs will reportedly get raises of 10 percent, about 900 executives will qualify for 20 percent hikes and a much smaller number of deputy ministers will enjoy raises of up to 35 percent.

The announcement is expected today from Treasury Board President Liz Sandals. It comes at a time when the governing Liberals are being criticized for not doing enough to help consumers struggling with skyrocketing hydro bills. Sandals said in a statement to the Toronto Star, “We need the ability to attract highly skilled and talented people into public life.”
