That’s the bottom line in a just released report from the city’s integrity commissioner.
Valerie Jepson says Ford broke council’s code of conduct in his dealings with two businesses while in public office.
She points out he took no steps to establish clear lines of separation between his political responsibilities and his duties as a principal of the family business.
The integrity commissioner adds he broke the rules when he arranged meetings with and made inquiries of staff for two companies; Apollo and Donnelley, which had long-standing relationships with the Ford family firm Deco, and when he accepted dinner and tickets from Apollo.
Ford has said he did not personally gain anything from his dealing while on council and that he was merely advocating for them because he felt their business would benefit the city and possibly save jobs.
Usually when a councillor is found to have broken the rules of conduct, council can sanction him or her by suspending their pay or reprimanding them.
Jepson doesn’t see the point of a reprimand as Ford’s no longer in office.
