He suffered a stroke two year ago following heart surgery, but it’s unclear if that had anything to do with his passing.
Glenn spent 24 years as a Democrat from Ohio in the Senate before briefly making a run for president in 1984.
He returned to space in 1998, at age 77, aboard the space shuttle ‘Discovery’.
Glenn, portrayed by Ed Harris in the Oscar-nominated film ‘The Right Stuff,’ about the early years of NASA, received the Congressional Gold Medal, which is the highest civilian honour in the U.S., in 2011 and the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2012.
