The Guyanese author, educator and diplomat whose experience teaching in the slums of East London that he turned into the international best-seller “To Sir, With Love”, has died at the age of 104.

The 1963 movie version of E.R. Braithwaite’s novel made stars of actor Sydney Portier and English pop singer Lulu.
Braithwaite also served in the newly independent Guyana’s first representative at the United Nations in the 60’s and and later was ambassador to Venezuela.
4 years ago, on his 100th birthday, he received an honorary medal from his native country for lifetime achievement.
