Toronto city council has voted 33 to 4 to create a 33% discount on TTC cash fares and a 21 per cent reduction on adult Metropasses for low-income riders.
At the fare levels approved by the TTC for next year, “Fair Pass” holders could take a single ride for $2.00 or buy a monthly pass for just over $115.
Council plans to roll out the program in phases over the next five years and when fully operational will cost the city about $50 million a year.
Toronto council has also approved a program to rate landlords and their buildings, much like the health department’s rating of the city’s restaurants.
