New research suggests that alcohol abuse, on its own, may be an independent risk factor for heart disease.

Scientists evaluated the medical records of more than 14-million patients and found that alcohol abuse is linked to an increased risk of three dangerous heart problems.

They are decreased flow to the heart muscle, abnormal electrical activity in the heart and decreased ability to pump blood to the body.

After correcting for various risk factors, the authors note that surprisingly, the healthier the patient overall, the more likely they are to be at risk for one of these adverse outcomes.

But the study does not demonstrate a clear significant correlation between alcohol abuse and these conditions.

You can read about the research in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology.
