White House spokesperson Sean Spicer says the president’s discussed the idea with congressional leaders and wants to include the measure in a comprehensive tax reform package.
Spicer spoke to reporters on Air Force One as Trump flew back from a Republican retreat in Philadelphia.
The press secretary says the Mexican import tax would generate $10-billion-a-year and ”easily pay for the wall.”
Spicer adds discussions are continuing to make sure the plan’s ”done right,” but says it ”clearly provides funding” for the wall.
Meanwhile, next week’s scheduled meeting in Washington between the American and Mexican presidents has been cancelled.
Trump says it was a joint decision based on disagreements about who’ll pay for the border wall.
Enrique Pena Nieto announced he decided to cancel in response to Trump’s tweet that unless Mexico agrees to pay, ”then it would be better to cancel the upcoming meeting.”
